Projectos II /Projects II

I'm still working in the garden, and at the moment I'm graveling the paths. With time (and a lot of work from me) the garden will be all covered in gravel. I've always liked gravel gardens but that was not the only thing that made me choose this type of garden. Gravel acts as mulch, making it more difficult for the weeds to grow and keeping the soil moist. I've been using a layer of newspaper under the gravel, which makes it more difficult for the weeds to grow, keeping the soil moisture.

Este é o aspecto do jardim visto do terraço. Está a ficar com bom ar, não?

This is what the garden looks like from the house, looking good, no?

Unfortunately, the rest of the garden is, still, looking like this. Not for long I hope.

My Echeverias are blooming. Some of them, like in the first two pictures, have flowers already, others will take a few more days, but almost all of them are producing flowers. I guess that is their way of thanking the new pots I put them in.

My cactus , after being repoted, are also growig well, and, some of them even rewarded me with flowers.

Novo projecto/New garden project

I found these railway sleepers in the garbage a few months ago. I thought it was such a waste that I had to bring them home, later I would think on what to do with them. Since the access to the lower part of my property was very hard I thought I should use them to build a few steps. It took me almost one day of hard work but the final result looks very nice. I planted some thyme between the steps so that with time they will cover al the space between the sleepers.

O caracol/ Snail

I found this snail wondering around my vegetable garden this morning. I found it so beautiful that I couldn't give him the same tragical faith of hundreds of snails before him. (lets just say it involves my shoe and a sound of breaking shell)

So I took him with me and released him during my morning walk with the dogs.

It was the most beautiful snail ever.

O meu jardim /My garden

I realized that I've rarelly posted pictures from my garden, just limiting myself to this or that plant. Here are a few pictures captured this morning.

This a native grass I'm trying in the garden

The thyme lawn keeps on growing (very) slowly. Gess I will have to plant a few more plants.

A beleza está nas mais pequenas coisas/Beauty is in the smallest things

Salvia leucantha's blossom in the morning rain

The first summer squashes are starting to grow

E as groselhas começam a amadurecer.

And the redcurrants are starting to ripe.

As amoras também vão no bom caminho.

Blackberries are also growing.

And this is our first watermelon flower.

Seems like we will be busy this Summer.

Alperces /Apricots

Delicioso!!

I harvested one of the two apricots that were growing in the vegetable garden. It was delicious!!

Iris "Blackout"

It took almost a year but finally iris "Blackout" bloomed. The photograph doesn't do it justice, since the flower is a lot darker, almost black. When I bought it, last year, I was told this was a tall iris, so I planted it in the back of the border, behind my Salvia leucantha. Well, as it turned out its a standard iris, and it gets completely hidden by the salvia. So now I have to find her another place in the garden where she can be seen and admired in the years to come.

As minhas cenouras/My carrots

This is where I sowed my carrots. I would love to tell you that they sprouted, grew and were harvasted by me (and that they were delicious!), or that some critter has munched on them, or even that they were killed by some weird disease. But no...in fact they never did sprout. This was my fourth atempt to grow carrots (with different seeds), and once again nothing sprouted. Is it so difficult to grow carrots? Is there any special secret to grow them that I should know? Or am I geneticaly incapable of growing carrots?

WHY THE HELL CAN'T I GROW CARROTS?? (Yes, I'm a bit paranoid about it...)

Liberdade!/Free at last!

I've been meaning to tell you that Pascoal is a free cat at last! He didn't get any slimer, but at least he finished his urinary diet. There he was, this mornig, giving me a hand in the vegetable garden
